What’s New?

New name, same us…JDP THEATRE CO. HAS BEEN REBRANDED!

22 April 2023

This year, we celebrate our 5-year anniversary. In those five years, we have grown and changed in ways that we never could’ve imagined when we first founded our company. We have experienced a consistent boom in participation, sold out shows & events, and public recognition as a contributor to the cultural vibrancy of our city and state. We cannot believe that we have come so far so quickly, and we are now taking this time to think about our long-term strategic plans, image, and vision. This has led us to the decision to proudly change the name of our organization and reintroduce ourselves as East End Theatre & Performing Arts.

East End Theatre & Performing Arts is a name that we spent many months developing. This name:

  • Incorporates the words “performing arts” to more closely align to our organization's mission and to reflect all of the programs we have added over the years that are more than “just theatre”

  • Reduces misinterpretation and confusion of our brand & identity

  • Anchors us in Eastern Rhode Island where there is an unserved need for greater arts access and where we chose to make our consistent home base for rehearsals, day-to-day operations, etc.

We wanted a new name that is clear, striking, and that sets a tone and path for the future of the company….and here’s a bit of fun trivia: if you look closely enough at our new logo, you’ll see the I-Way Bridge that needs to be crossed to get to East Providence reflected in the tail of the shooting star!

Under this new name, we will continue to provide the same high-quality programs, professional-scale productions, and jam-packed calendar of exciting events that you have come to expect from us. This is just a pretty new package for an already beautiful organization.

We hope you are all as proud and excited about this as we are, and we can’t wait to continue our incredible work under this improved brand!

Love,

Jillian Gesualdi, Jess Mayette, and Judy de Perla

Murder is in the air at JDP!

11 February 2023

Mobsters, intrigue, and sequins abounded in our Roaring ‘20s themed murder mystery dinner fundraiser! JDP’s dedicated staff, volunteers, and resident cast members came together to put on an engaging event, where audience members tried to guess “whodunnit” as they watched a show filled with love, betrayal, jealousy, and greed. The event was a killer success and we look forward to hosting another in the future!

Audition season is upon us!

1 January 2023

This month, we have a whopping 3 auditions coming up! First, from January 6-8, we have auditions for our next Main Stage musical: Beauty & the Beast. This stage adaptation of Disney’s classic film is filled with fun characters, lavish costumes, and jaw-dropping musical numbers. It’s not one to miss!

Then, on January 14th, the Turnouts are auditioning for their second season! This group is geared towards individuals with dance and/or musical theatre backgrounds who are looking for a welcoming environment where they can continue to express, explore, and/or grow their love of the art form. This past season, the Turnouts performed at multiple JDP events, as well as East Providence Pride, the Looff Art Festival, the East Providence tree lighting, and Slater Park’s Winter Wonderland!

Finally, on January 21st, the Overtones will be auditioning for their third season. This a capella group is grounded in a love for vocal performance and a commitment to healthy singing technique. The Overtones practice and perform year-round at both JDP and other public events.

JDP’s overtones, turnouts, & jr tones spread holiday cheer

18 December 2022

From November 26th through December 18th, JDP’s three performing groups have spent each weekend traveling throughout Rhode Island and southeastern Massachusetts, caroling & performing festive routines for the general public! Featuring six separate events that spanned from La Salette Shrine, to the Polar Express, to our hometown tree lighting, this has been our most packed holiday season yet and it has been wonderful to share our groups’ amazing talents with folks from around the area! Be on the lookout this February for special Valentines Day content and follow the Turnouts and Overtones on social media for updates & behind-the-scenes content!

New Program Alert!

1 September 2022

We’re excited to introduce our newest educational program: the Junior Tones! This a cappella group is an offshoot of JDP’s Overtones and is geared towards teen and pre-teen performers. Many of our Junior Stage cast members have been asking for a year-long program, where they can continue to learn while also having fun with their friends, and we believe that this program can provide all of that in a safe, non-competitive environment. Check out the Junior Tones this October at our Pumpkin Patch fundraiser!

Announcing our new partnership with PRIDE!

2 February 2022

During our run of The Laramie Project in 2019, JDP & Youth Pride Inc. (YPI) began working together in a few small ways that made a big difference. Today, we are growing, strengthening, and formalizing that partnership, working to support each other's missions and enrich the lives of those who come through both of our doors.

So many LGBTQIA+ individuals have found a home at both YPI and at JDP, and we look forward to working in tandem to provide for our community!

Welcome to our newest staff member!

27 December 2021

We are thrilled to introduce our new Chief of Staff and Education Director: Mike Miele, who is joining our team in the new year. Mike brings with him an extensive background in not only theatre, but also educational pedagogy and anti-racist teaching. In his new roles, Mike will be overseeing JDP’s camps and classes, spearheading new educational programming, and providing professional development and coaching to our production staff and teaching artists - helping to support their continued professional growth.

JDP’s private lessons just became GRAND!

17 August 2021

For this amazing donation to our organization, we thank Thomas A. Cote, whose piano we promise to honor and spread joy through for generations

Thomas A. Cote was born in 1932 and was a lifelong resident of Fall River, MA. He earned his BA in Business from Stonehill College, went on to earn his MBA from Bridgewater State College, and served as Vice Principal of Kuss Middle School until his retirement in the early 90s. What Tom loved above everything was his incredible passion and talent for music. He was an extraordinarily talented pianist, who shared the stage with both Liberace and Irving Berlin at the Durfee Theater in the early 1960s. Throughout his life, he continued to play countless shows in the community, and was renowned for his incredible ability to play, despite not knowing how to read sheet music. He continued to share his gift until his passing in February 2021. Tom's family is gifting his most beloved Wurlitzer baby grand piano to JDP Theatre Co., where it will be able to bring joy to countless students learning the art of music.

"Live a life of happy melodies and music"
